FAQ
- I’ve never tried yoga before. Where do I start?
- We have a number of beginning yoga classes that are good places to find a foundation for the kind of practice you prefer. We offer a few yoga basics classes, which break down alignment, breathing, strengthening, and stretching. We have a beginner series on Saturdays at 8am at the west studio that is something like a 4-part crash course in yoga, exploring the basic standing poses and sun salutation.
The Bikram series is also great for beginners, as the instructor will walk you through the details of each pose. It is also nice because it's the same 26 poses each time. You can track your progress over time and see how your body is changing with the practice.
- What if I'm not very flexible?
- Then you should definitely start practicing yoga. The practice is intended to give your body a balance of strength and flexibility, which most people do not naturally have. Genetics, injuries, and our increasingly sedentary modern lifestyle all contribute to imbalances in the body. Yoga can help to correct these imbalances. Be sure to let the teacher know about any particular injuries or limitations you might have so he or she can help you with adjustments as necessary.
- Is it a cardiovascular exercise? Can I lose weight?
- Any exercise that increases the work of the heart and lungs is a cardiovascular exercise. Bikram, vinyasa, and many other forms of hatha yoga not only work the cardiovascular system, but increase lung capacity and train the body to work more efficiently. A consistent yoga practice can transform your body inside and out.
- Why is Bikram done in a hot room?
- A warm body is more flexible. The joints, muscles, and fluids of the body become more mobile in the 105-degree room, allowing you to deepen your poses in a shorter amount of time. You will see faster results, and your muscles will be less sore. The heat also helps to remove toxins from the body, as it does in saunas, steam rooms, and sweat lodges. The skin is the largest organ in the body, and sweat is an excellent vehicle for carrying toxins out.
- What should I bring?
- You will want to bring a mat, water, and a towel (especially for Bikram). These things are available for purchase or rent at the studio if you don't have them.
- Do I need to reserve a spot?
- All our classes are drop-in, so you don’t need to call ahead or reserve a spot. Before your first class, you should arrive about 20 minutes early to fill out a new student form and waiver. In general, it’s a good idea to arrive about 15 minutes before class to find a spot and get acclimated to the room.
- What’s the new student special?
- The new student special is 14 days of unlimited yoga for $20. It can be used at either studio, for any drop-in class. You can simply sign up for it when you arrive for your first class, and there is no need to reserve a spot.
- What’s the Yoga Challenge?
- The yoga challenge is 5 classes a week for 2 months to kickstart your practice. There are cards in the lobby that you can use to track your attendance.
